I think that only research on particular shops, companies and owners would give the answers we are looking for, and that would require presence in England. Which I don't have!

I will post here if I ever find a really good source of further information.
Thanks!
Lesley-Anne McLeodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14899105096816697616noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-333091580028808174.post-85464511793427244722023-02-24T08:00:20.577-08:002023-02-24T08:00:20.577-08:00Do we know anything of the shopkeepers themselves?...Do we know anything of the shopkeepers themselves? Men? Women?

Did they dress like the members of the ton (their customers, I assume--at least for the nicer shops), only in less expensive fabrics, or were their clothes much simpler?

What about hours and days open? Did any of your research yield data on that with regards to individual shops or the larger bazaars?

I enjoyed reading your article. Unfortunately, some of the links are now pointing to pages that have since been changed or taken down, drat. This is a hard subject to research. You are correct on that!

Thanks! Artists like Plautilla Nelli, Edmonia Lewis, Galizia, Ghirlandaio, Robusti, Gentileschi, Teerlinc, Van Hemessen, Katsushika, Carriera, etc. all deserve far more recognition. However, it's important when highlighting the work of artists such as these that we not exaggerate their prowess and give a false perception of them or the societal obstacles they faced.

Your claim that, "Despite the difficulties they faced, Angelica Kauffmann and Mary Moser began the Royal Academy of Arts in 1768" is not the full story. Kauffman and Moser are founding members of the London Royal Academy. They were two out of 34 members, all the rest of which were men. The way you worded this, it gives the impression that two women alone founded the RA, which was a deeply patriarchal society for the vast majority of its existence, and has only recently begun to make an effort to become more inclusive. Had Kauffman and Moser been the only founders, the academy would have likely died in a drawing room or parlor, and never become a venerable institution that still exists to this day. I'm not saying that it is insignificant that they were founding members --truly, for the time period it was revolutionary--, but it would be erroneous to say that the two of them began it.

Take this painting by Johan Joseph Zoffany: https://www.rct.uk/collection/400747/the-academicians-of-the-royal-academy He depicts the Academicians preparing for a life-drawing class with a nude model. All the men are present, while the women members are relegated to portraits on the wall, for even though they were founding members and Academicians in their own rights, it was unthinkable that they would attend a session with a live nude and exercise similar privileges to their male counterparts.

So, thank you for promoting awareness of their accomplishments. I just wanted to clarify this point because there's little enough information out there that I hope to minimize any misinformation.Emikonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-333091580028808174.post-21776590388547346932020-03-18T07:02:54.815-07:002020-03-18T07:02:54.815-07:00I believe the "SEAWOOD" mentioned here w...I believe the "SEAWOOD" mentioned here was my 5 x great-grandfather Samuel SEWARD (c.1737-1810), or possibly his son of the same name (c.1788-1828), who seems to have taken over the travelling fantoccini exhibition after his father's death.
